Citizenship Questions

Why do we ask if you are a citizen? Do we share this information with any other agency?

New York State law requires that jurors be United States citizens. By law, the Commissioner of Jurors Office cannot provide citizenship information to anyone outside of the Jury Division. Under New York State law all potential juror and juror records are confidential, and may not be disclosed to any other person or agency, except by court order (see Judiciary Law Section 509(a)). Respond to your Juror Qualification Questionnaire and answer NO if you are not a citizen to prevent additional notices. You must also send a copy of a current Visa, Passport, Permanent Resident card (Green card) or Employment Authorization card with your questionnaire form. If you are unable to provide any of these, please reach out to your local Commissioner of Jurors Office for alternative options.
